Our Story

Go With The Flow

On June 27, 2014 a new lava flow began from the Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Being our home, one of our toughest and most meaningful lessons of life had begun, letting go of control. When Madame Pele sends lava down the mountainside toward your house there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. What was once our vision of how and where we would live our life was now a firefly passing us under the moonlight, its own agenda, its own path in flight.

Gateways

But, as the Universe often shows, tumultuous times are hidden gateways to magic. Things need to be broken down so that they can be rebuilt and made better. During that time, I was interviewed by the Los Angeles Times: https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-hawaii-volcano-lava-flow-20141029-story.html.

Changes

And so by a force of nature our journey working and living overseas had begun. Within three weeks we had found teaching jobs in Malaysia, sold or donated most of our belongings, tied up loose ends, and brought our 5 year old son halfway across the world. Have we looked back? Yes. Do we look forward? Yes. But mostly we aim to stay present. We would like to share our experience with you. Welcome to Global Mindful Family!

The Big Island Now

With the highest degree of respect, it is important to note that the 2014 lava flow discontinued its path a couple of months after we left. But, in 2018 returned in full force (please watch The Leilani Eruption documentary, a film by John Tarson of EpicLava). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uECkXVSUbGs

This is what ended up happening after we left. This picture is taken about 5 blocks from our house.
